Current Events Debated at Engineering Forum

Electrical Outlet

AC trumped DC in the War of Currents during a forum featuring members of the EMerge Alliance. The EMerge Alliance is “an open industry association leading the rapid adoption of safe DC power distribution in commercial buildings” through the development of EMerge Alliance standards.

The July forum, a special meeting of IEEE’s PI-2 Chapter, was organized by Steve Pearson of the Pearson Strategy Group and vice president of the Austin chapter.

Discussion included the benefits of DC power over AC power in our homes and businesses, existing products, the underlying technology and existing installations.

Forty people attended the panel discussion with three member companies of the Emerge Alliance: ABB, Nextek Power Systems, and Emerson Network Power.

Moderator was David E. Geary, PE – Director of Engineering, StarLine DC Solutions.

Panelists were:

• BJ Sonnenberg – Manager Business Development, Emerson Network Power
• Paul Savage – CEO, Nextek Power System
• Dr. Mietek Glinkowski – Global Head of Technology, ABB

We hope to have these members back in a year or two for a progress update.
